Coptic is an ancient Egyptian language that is spoken within the Coptic Orthodox Church by Coptic Orthodox Christians. Coptic used to be the main language spoken in Egypt. When the Arabs conquered Egypt the different language and practice of religion that they came with became dominant. Due to assimilation, Egyptians adapted to the Islam religion and to the Arabic language. Coptic can still be found spoken in some parts of Egypt, Libya, Sudan, and the United States, but majority of use is in liturgical texts of the Coptic community. This includes the hymns, prayers, and readings used within the Coptic Catholic Church. It is not considered a ‘dead’ language- although there are no longer native speakers, there are around 5-10 million people who continue to use the language today.
