Gaetano Gambino (Palermo, Sicily):
“Growing up, I always wished my family had stayed in Italy rather than moving to America. It never made sense why they came here except for them saying ‘There’s a better education and future when you’re older.’ My father had a decent job, and all my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins were still in Italy at the time. I made many friends over the years, and I still hang out with them every time I go. But starting my adult life I greatly appreciate and understand what my parents mean now. America, especially New York has many more working opportunities and my parents made many sacrifices so that I can now get an education, have my own car, make my own money, and build a solid foundation for my own future family and kids without the stresses and hardships they had at my age. At some point in my youth, I plan on moving there for a few months and possibly retiring there depending on future family and financial situations. Starting a life in countries like Italy is extremely difficult as I see with all my family and friends there now but enjoying the fruits of one’s labor there is much more fulfilling I feel. The day to day life is much more tranquil and peaceful like a country setting compared to what one is used to in the city. Going on long walks or even horseback riding as a main form of transportation or even growing your own farm with animals and crops is the norm. Warmer weather all year round and a completely different culture focused more on family, friendships, and traditions is how I see Italy.”
